Great Ocean Road is the Rt. 101 of Australia paralleling the other side of the Pacific Ocean for over 200 kilometers. The dizzying cliff faces drop into a coral blue ocean below, while busses and cars crawl along, inspired by the views.

It’s no wonder that they have turnouts every few kilometers to allow for scenic drivers to pull over and those to pass that actually need to get somewhere. The highway is also dotted with signs reminding all the international drivers that Australia drives on the wrong side of the road.

Of course, on our first day on the road, we were greeted with pelting rain. I’m not sure why Eldar came all the way from Seattle for this weather, but after all, it is the start of ‘winter’ here in Australia (meaning you need to wear a sweatshirt). Nevertheless, the views were still spectacular.

The winding road is sprinkled with vistas every few kilometers, appropriately named the 12 Apostles, London Bridge, and the Grotto, among many others. We even made it down to the Cape Otway Lighthouse. We thought it said 1.2 kilometers but 12 kilometers later we made it. Along the way, we were even able to see a herd of kangaroo, probably the best detour we took along the whole road.

We continued driving, and driving, quickly realizing distances here are on-par if not worse than driving distances in the US. While the Great Ocean Road is appropriately named, the decision to drive down to Adelaide may have not exactly been what looked like the short distance on the map that we thought it was. Two days, too many chocolate bars, and countless servos (gas stations) later we made it to Adelaide…
